    This town is falling apart.

Welcome to Portsford, a seaside town fighting a losing battle with coastal erosion. When a sudden announcement threatens to tear the community apart, in an attempt to raise spirits, everyone comes together for a night of drinking and dancing. But as the party becomes a pressure cooker, difficult conversations surrounding shared loss of home, and collective and individual responsibility rise to the surface. But wouldn't you rather just dance the night away?

Devised and performed by the company, FREAK OUT! is inspired by the UK’s disappearing coastline and draws from our research into affected communities in East Anglia. It draws attention to how climate change will affect those on the periphery of society who are often overlooked, and ultimately what we owe to each other as a community in times of crisis.

FREAK OUT! experiments with theatrical styles and genres, blending clowning, movement, live art and multimedia with an issue-led narrative into an offbeat, high-energy cocktail of a show. Enjoy it while it lasts, because things are about to get messy... literally.

VAULT Festival 2023 Show of the Week Nominee. This production has been supported by funding from Arts Council England.

Content NoticeContains strong language and themes of climate anxiety. This is most graphically depicted in specific key moments: a scene when two characters submerge their heads in buckets of water and hold their breath, and when one character gets physically beaten by the cast using by beach items (such as woggles and balls) whilst a projection of extreme weather due to climate change plays in the background.

"Our children live in the most deprived ward in London and their parents cannot afford to pay for the classes and activities many more privileged children enjoy after school and at the weekends. A free-to-access youth group run by a local theatre in a professional setting is an incredible opportunity."
