Almost a year on from the work-in-progress sharing as part of Calm Down Dear Festival, Cry For Me is back at CPT for three nights.
Set in a not too implausible future where crying is just one more type of labour that can be outsourced to a cheap migrant workforce, Cry For Me draws on Romanian traditions of wailing. Babele bocitoare (buh-beh-leh bow-chi-twa-reh) are Romanian professional mourners: older women who go to funerals to cry for the deceased and their family. Like rappers, they improvise lyrics to music on the spot.
When all Romanians left Romania in search of work elsewhere, two babe (buh-beh), Baba Luţa and Baba Deea, decided to come to London in search of clients. Almost a year on from that move, business is thriving and the babe (buh-beh) are more ready than ever to work for YOU.
A cabaret about the act of crying as a social duty and a form of resilience, where no suffering is required!
Generously supported by POMOC, a grassroots organisation that uses art and activism to spur political awareness and social change.
Supported by Odd Eyes Theatre, Bezna Theatre, Camden People's Theatre and Counterpoints Arts.
Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
