Surrogate was founded in 2019. We are a touring theatre company, based in Edinburgh. We share international voices asking urgent questions about our lives, and our society, now. We collaborate with multi-disciplinary artists and creatives from different social, cultural, geographical, and spiritual horizons to collectively search for new dramatic forms. We are committed to responding to the climate and ecological emergency, believing in the transformative capacity of the imagination to reinvent alternative future(s) and we seek to support emerging artists who are under-represented in the theatre sector via our ‘search for surrogate(s)’ initiative. Our practice addresses the relationship between contemporary power structures, forms of truth-telling and the body.

How do we retain the personal in the political? Designing Who Killed My Father.

It felt important for the questions Édouard Louis is asking around the relationship between queerness and class in Who Killed My Father to be approached with nuance, and as a personal, playful journey of self-discovery. Co-designer Hazel Low talks about creating a sensuous, visual language for an intimate, politically charged text.

"Hats off to the CPT for this fine show, well researched and coming from a place of great passion... Community theatre at its most effective."
