The Department of Ulterior Motives (DUM) is a Brighton-based, neurodiverse-led theatre company dedicated to making ambitious work achievable alongside regular working lives. We specialise in high-concept, low-budget productions that can be staged anywhere from outdoor spaces and cramped basements to traditional theatres. Drawing primarily on stories from the public domain, our shows blend fast, physical, ensemble performance with clear, accessible storytelling that tackles identity, community and authoritarianism with a mischievously political edge.

Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
