Why are asexual characters only ever robots, aliens, or the undead? Is Barbie an asexual icon?
A middle-aged divorcée, a young gay couple, and a stripper walk into a bar. They are all Ace, but there is no punchline.
The National LGBT Survey 2018 found that the trans and ace communities are the two most vulnerable groups to being pathologised by medical professionals and others. Asexual people are 10% more likely to be offered “conversion” therapy than any other group. The A in LGBTQIA+ stands for asexuality, but it is not often visible in queer communities and rarely at the forefront of public awareness.
We have a problem, and it starts with representation. Virtually every Ace person we interviewed has only managed to name Florence from Sex Education and Todd from Bojack Horseman as the only explicit representation they have seen in the media.
There is currently no asexual representation on UK stages. Burning Attic is here to change that.
Devised from research on real lived experiences through interviews and workshops, “Why Dirty Dancing Is My Favourite Film” is an investigative show exploring the spectrum of Ace identities, challenging the societal script about our romantic and sexual connections.
