What would you do if one of the people you loved most in the world was... extremely homophobic? What if that person was about to die? Would you come out to them? Maria needs to make a decision!

Part of Voila! Theatre Festival (4-24 Nov) in venues across London.

Get 25% off when you book more than one show across our Autumn Season (September - December 2024).

Maria’s very Catholic grandmother is dying. She prays for Maria to find a boyfriend every night. But Maria is gay, and she wants Granny to know, so that she doesn’t send a man looking for her from beyond the grave. But Granny is extremely homophobic and believes all gay people will burn in hell. Everyone in the family is against this. “Just let the old lady die in peace.”

Is Maria selfish for wanting to tell Granny?

Or a liar for keeping the truth?

Is God watching all of this?

During a night spent at the hospital, Maria needs to make a decision.

This piece is based on Brazilian theatre maker Maria Machado's real experience with her grandmother. It's a comedic and absurdist piece that reflects on growing up as a queer person in an extremely religious household and country and how we carry that Catholic guilt throughout our lives.

With lots of emotion and laughter, Maria shows us how we freak out and make weird decisions when death is looming in the horizon.

"Companies like us genuinely would not be making theatre if it was not for the ability of CPT and its team to identify artists who are worth taking a chance on."
