  • Lover. Worker. Mother. (WIP)

    Tues 10 Nov at 7:15pm
    Tickets £10 (+ booking fee)
Three selves venture beyond the boundaries of womanhood. A throbbing piece of gig theatre about identity, queerness, and the cost of becoming free.

    A work-in-progress sharing of:

    Lover. Worker. Mother.

A crumbling affair. A fight for promotion. A looming custody battle.

Each has a John they need to escape from. And each has a Body they need to embrace.

Lover’s toxic affair has finally imploded - her boyfriend's wife is pregnant. Heartbroken, she stalks the city night craving sexual distraction, when she meets someone totally unexpected. Across town, Worker is haunted by their late spouse whilst in a battle for promotion amidst workplace bias. Grief collides with questions of identity and mortality until a magnetic bond sparks new life. Meanwhile, Mother is unraveling. Terrified of losing her child, and gripped by intrusive thoughts, she’s in a fight to survive when a chance encounter dares her to hope again.

Three lives, struggling to keep their balance beneath the weight of expectation, discover that freedom has its own lunar timing.

Written by Imogen Frances (director of tell me straight & aggy, Park Theatre) and composed by Celtic trip/pop singer Clara Pople’s (BBC’s Introducing Song of The Year, 2025), with dramaturgical support from Danielle James (Finalist, Women’s Playwrighting Prize, 2025).

Produced by Messy Theatre with support from Camden People’s Theatre, Young Vic, Exeter Northcott and Intercom Trust.

"One of those rare pieces that gets under your skin as something dealing with universal experiences in a completely personal way. Its poetry and theatricalism is so exciting and I can’t wait to see how it is staged. A gem of a play."

"An incredibly striking play. A witty, true and recognisable portrayal of what it is to live as someone who’s perceived as a woman. It left me tantalised and hungry."
