  • Tessa Parr presents

    I AM JOHNNY

    Thurs 8 & Fri 9 Oct at 9pm
    Tickets £12 - £18 (+ booking fee)
Fresh off the FlixBus from Edinburgh Fringe, white thirty-something poet-manchild Johnny returns to Camden People's Theatre for two more chances to battle the absurdities of his complex existence.

Boys, are you shirkin for a gherkin?

Attempting to embrace openness while navigating the pressures of his troubled masculinity, thirty something northern white male Johnny has found the spoken word scene. He's watched the poet lads on Instagram and TikTok, reckons he's got the gist, and now he's ready to express his complex feelings. But in a world where vulnerability has become a performance, is the audience ready for the truth?

Strikingly timely in light of the rapidly widening class divide and the evolving discourse around troubled masculinity, Parr presents a gripping and intimate exploration of masculinity, emotional exposure, and the quiet expectations that sit beneath honesty.

Parr commented “With I AM JOHNNY my intention is to bring a nuanced perspective to this topic—one shaped and held by a female voice. The show seeks to hold up a mirror to reality, offering both confrontation and liberation”

The debut solo theatre show from acclaimed actor and theatre maker Tessa Parr, I AM JOHNNY, is an unsettlingly funny, absurd, and politically sharp interrogation of gender, class and vulnerability. Blending surreal humour and piercing insight, Johnny invites audiences to attempt to understand the man’s complex existence.

"Parr is by turns melancholy, vulnerable, churlish, mercurial, vicious, playful, righteous – a long list that throws into relief the restricted range of many female roles"
    The Guardian (Parr as Hamlet)
"Nobody has ever hit the nail on the head so accurately about fragile and toxic masculinity. Johnny’s performance quickly became a strong, intellectual and genuinely funny study of gender stereotypes"
The Gay Uk - Curious Festival, Newcastle
