Sweet Mother tells tales of 1960s 70s and 80s families in Toxteth, Liverpool. Real stories & real lives take centre stage in this oral history project created and directed by Nwoko Arts artistic director Maria Paul.
Created using verbatim interviews with four women who became friends through the shared experience of raising families in 1960s and 70s and 80s Toxteth; the play looks at the previously untold stories of white women who fell in love with, married and raised families with black men in the Liverpool 8 community during a time of racial unrest.
Sweet Mother is celebration of the strength and resilience of these women and the many more like them.
The women have lived incredible lives and have an archive of shared memories and stories that could translate to the silver screen. Full of humour, the play highlights the challenges these women faced, while also looking and the unforgettable bonds created in being a part of their community.

Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
