Absurdistan: 1989. An ambitious young girl in a red cape journeys through the forest to see her Babushka. Wolves, goodies in a basket and a paranoid secret agent on a mission.

We all know the story of Little Red Riding Hood; the wolf, a hunter and a girl in a red hood who travels to help her grandma. But what if the reality was different, but the same? What if there was no helping anyone, just personal gain and the exciting new idea that you can have it all for yourself? The Red Riding Hood is an adaptation of the classic fairytale by the Flying Dodo production company. The plot is set during the early 90s, in the fictional Eastern European country of Absurdistan. In the backdrop of the fall of the communist mega-state we follow Babushka, the racketeer wolves, a state hunter and of course Red Riding Hood herself through a satirical, absurd and strangely heart-warming tale of the folk classic. Expect European folk dance, physical theatre and moral confusion. We flip everything that is right, wrong; and all that is wrong, right!

Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
