"Passers, Poets" is a monologue about the shaping and continuation of a parallel and taboo love affair. It is a narrative in poetic language, that aims to unveil the madness and deconstruction of love.
This love is quietly accepted by its principal participants, two couples who live poetically. But society, others, strangers, and the passersby, cannot tolerate it and strive to destroy it. In response, the protagonist, hides in poetry with the help of his lover to be safe from the harm of judgments and to be able to preserve this love, silent, in their eyes. From the beginning moment, the narrative unfolds in a contained space—a carpet—within a realm that is placeless yet intimately familiar, a world akin to poetry itself. The poem remains unseen, yet it is felt through the language of the performance. It becomes armour for love, a refuge and salvation for taboo-breaking people. It is as though the performance stages a profound struggle between love and the intricate textures of human emotion on one hand, and rigid norms and unyielding tradition on the other.
"Passers, Poets" is a monologue about the shaping and continuation of a parallel and taboo love affair. A narrative in poetic language, which strives to reveal both the madness and the deconstruction of love. Ultimately, it is a battle between love and the details of human feeling, set against the inflexible customs and traditions.
Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
