May-June is getting married, and she needs a Woman of Good Fortune to bless the ceremonies. Unfortunately, her mother is far from lucky. Twelve years ago, after being tormented by the noises in her head and a mysterious girl in red, she disappeared into her bedroom and never emerged again.
At Broken Bridge explores the relentless attachment between a mother and a child, the irresistible call of the past, and the internal landscape of migration and exile. As both Mother and Daughter struggle to reintegrate their fractured selves, they meet at each end of a broken bridge and question:
How can we love those who are worlds apart from us?
Award-winning theatre company Ellandar Productions returns to Camden People’s Theatre with a new work written & performed by Jasmine Chiu 趙明 (The Place 2021 Choreodrome Artist), directed & co-devised with critically acclaimed theatre maker Elisabeth Gunawan (UNFORGETTABLE GIRL, 2022 Offies Award Winner). This innovative piece of theatre blends evocative text with captivating visual storytelling, puppetry, and movement to explore personal and cultural myths within the East Asian diaspora.
Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
