"Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.”

The Virgin Travels is a challenging, powerful, and often funny piece, using music and movement to protest against the pressures put upon female sexual expression. Chronicling the lifespan of one woman from gestation to adulthood, we illuminate her struggle to reconcile with her restrictive Catholic upbringing and find her place in the world. Celebrating the obstacles and joys of female sexuality, we journey with The Virgin as she fights to break free from her learned restraints of religion, the male gaze, shame, and compulsory heterosexuality.

Glasgow-based performer-director duo Emma Smith and Katie Smith – who aren’t related, by the way – graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s MA Classical and Contemporary Text program (Acting and Directing, respectively) in 2019. This is the first show under their official company banner.

“It means so much to be working at CPT, it’s such a good opportunity to work in a professional environment at my age. I didn’t think that was ever going to happen and it means the world to me. It’s really going to help prepare me for my future and where I want to go”
