In this debut storytelling performance, Maxwell makes a prodigal's return to the musty vibrancy of amateur dramatics - engrossing her family for four generations. Utilising queer theory, degree-level practice-based research and a showstopper of a smile, I, AmDram minds the gap between the identities we assert and the worlds we leave. This international premiere will contain a small amount of show tunes with some simple choreography. Maxwell is as excited about that as you are. The piece was initially develope in 2017 through Starting Blocks, Camden People's Theatre's artist development scheme. It has since been presented in manifold guises at the Barn Theatre (WGC), Watford Fringe, and various London work-in-progress nights. Both artist and production are honoured to enjoy the support and best wishes of the Welwyn Thalians Musical and Dramatic Society (est. 1929, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire).
Tobi King Bakare and this theatre deserve a shout-out for such a young, diverse audience. There is so much talk about audiences being full of over 60s and why, why can’t theatres get the crowds in to reflect society in general? Well, I’m happy to say that on a rainy Thursday evening, the theatre was completely full.
